Adele Gets Brutally Honest About The Negative Reactions To Her Health Journey

In April 2019, Adele divorced Simon Konecki. In May 2020, she shocked the internet when she posted a picture on Instagram that showed off a newly slender body in a black mini dress. The picture was in celebration of her birthday, but all anyone could talk about was her body transformation.

Some people assumed that her weight loss was revenge after her divorce, that she had a new “revenge body.” According to Adele, that’s not the case. She didn’t wake up one day and decide to lose weight. In fact, losing weight wasn’t even her goal. Instead, she simply found exercise to be an effective form of therapy for her, and the started exercising a lot. In the process, she dropped more than 100 pounds over the course of 2 years.

While we should be happy for Adele and her health journey, not everyone is. Some people are actually hurt by the fact that Adele lost weight. Many of these people identified with Adele when she was plus size and felt like she was giving in to societal pressure or even abandoning them and the body positivity movement by losing weight.

During a recent interview with Oprah, Adele addressed the negative reactions to her weight loss. She explained that she isn’t “shocked or even phased by” the negative reactions. She added, “I’m either too big or too small; I’m either hot or I’m not.”

The singer went on to explain, “I was body positive then, and I’m body positive now, but it’s not my job to validate how people feel about their bodies.”

Adele doesn’t want anyone to feel bad about their own body simply because she lost weight. She said, “I feel bad that it’s made anyone feel horrible about themselves — but that’s not my job. I’m trying to sort my own life out. I can’t add another worry.”

She went on to explain, “I never looked up to anyone because of their body. You know, I never admired anyone because they had the same hair color as me, or the same style as me.” Basically, she doesn’t think people should look up to her simply because she does or does not look like them in some way.

On Twitter, many of Adele’s fans are loving her body positivity statements and pointing out that being body positive at any weight is what real body positivity is all about.

In addition, her fans don’t think her body should have any impact on how other people feel about their own bodies.
