$768 Million Powerball Jackpot Winner Steps Forward After Almost Throwing Away Winning Ticket

Manual Franco is a regular guy. He’s 24-years old, has a job, a girlfriend and a good head on his shoulders. He struggled to keep more than $1,000 in his savings account. He wished he could travel more often. That was then. This is now.

On March 27th, Franco bought some lottery tickets at a Speedway gas station in New Berlin, a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He looked through his quick-pick tickets to see if he had won anything. He thought he had checked all the tickets, but then he saw that there was one ticket stuck to another ticket.

Franco could hardly believe his eyes as he saw that the first two numbers matched the winning numbers. He glanced at the Powerball number and saw that that was a match too. He looked at the last three numbers – all matches. He shouted “No freakin way!” and screamed for a good 5 to 10 minutes as he realized that he had just won the $768 million Powerball jackpot.

Well, since he choose the lump sum cash payout instead of the 29-year payout, he actually won $477 million. Subtract taxes, and the total is reduced to $326 million. Still, that’s enough money to validate jumping up and down and screaming.

Wisconsin does not allow lottery winners to remain anonymous. Franco was required to reveal his name and hometown, but it was his choice to talk to the media. Perhaps he was hoping that a press conference would deter reporters from hanging out at his front door.

Franco sounds like he is as prepared as he can be for his new normal. He has hired a new lawyer, Andrew Stoltmann, who has helped other lottery winners and sports stars who became suddenly wealthy.

Franco said that he quit his job 2 days after finding out he was a lottery winner. He’s interested in traveling, and he doesn’t plan to buy too many big, fancy things. He doesn’t think he’ll become one of those lottery winners who blows all the money and ends up poor.

Hopefully that ends up being the case. Stoltmann seems to think so. He said about Franco, “He’s a smart guy with a good head on his shoulders.”
