Ever since his time as a judge on American Idol, Simon Cowell has been one of the hardest judges to please. He’s known for his blunt criticism of singers and is never worried about hurting someone’s feelings. So when he says something nice about someone’s voice, you really have to take it to heart. What’s even better is when he’s genuinely shocked by an amazing performance—you know he isn’t faking it!

Well, one of those moments happened on a recent episode of America’s Got Talent, when 11-year-old Madison Baez completely stunned him with her amazing voice. She was actually only chosen to sing during a commercial break, a time when Cowell usually leaves the set to take a break to “avoid random performers,” as he puts it. However, even from outside the stage, he heard Baez’s voice and had to come back to see who she was because of how incredible her vocals were.

The thing is, Baez has been wanting to compete on the show since she was just 4 years old. Sure, this wasn’t how she chose to audition, but it was even better, since it sent the judges into a state of shock at how amazing her voice was.

She decided to sing “Amazing Grace” for her performance, which, as you might imagine, is no easy song to master, especially at such a young age. But when you hear her insane vocals, you’re going to wonder how she wasn’t chosen to audition sooner.

While commercial break singers happen often, it’s not very common to have all the judges in complete awe, especially Cowell. However, he and the rest of them— Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Sofia Vergara—were all in love with her voice. Mandel, especially, was so enthralled that he hit the golden buzzer for her performance.

What’s more, Baez says that if she wins the million-dollar grand prize, she wants to donate it to cancer research so that she can help people like her dad, who has been affected by cancer.

What a beautiful moment! You can probably imagine what her voice sounds like to have stunned so many judges, including Cowell, but you’ve got to really hear it to believe it. Check out her performance below (which also received two standing ovations)!
